Postby HRRacing » Sat Jan 07, 2017 4:14 pm

Been searching the net and this site. Can't find a solid 2017 390RR-S review. Curious if anyone out there has one and how it performs. Please post a review, send me links or PM me.

I also wonder how the 390 and 430 perform in the technical stuff?
Are the just expensive DRZ's?

I think he was commenting on how smooth the power delivery was. You can't really compare the DRZ and the beta 390rr. The KTM 400 is a better comparison actually. Chilly White compared the 390 carb model to this until he then rode a 400 back to back with one. He said the 390 was better in every way, just reminded him of the smooth 400exc. He has long articles and videos on youtube. 360enduro? The 430 is more like the 350 from what I've been told, quick revving racier feel. I can tell you my 350rr revs fast and almost feels two stroke like. Makes me ride it like a 2stroke in the tight stuff.

I did find this: http://www.tractionerag.ca/sept2016/htm ... tml?page=1. There's a small review of the 390.

I love my 250RR and works awesome for me in the riding areas I ride. But I can't plate a 2-stroke for DS and I'm interested in having one-bike-does-all. I have a lot of great DS riding areas around and a lot of great trail areas I can connect with a DS. The 390 seems like it would fit my wants/needs. I just don't know enough about it and would like to hear from someone who owns one with the FI rather than a magazine review.

DRZ comment was a joke sorry. Haha
I think at 190#'s the 430RR would be a good fit for me.
I wanted to get away from 4T's and get a 250/300RR but IDK any more.
Sherco, Gas Gas, Beta...Idk
Thx guys, Ghost

Really tempted with a new 390 myself just not sure I can let my 300 go. The power is silky smooth after fitting the necj needle and oil injection takes care of the premix. But im seriously considering for next month

I have ridden a bunch of the newer fuel injected 350s in many different conditions and I rode the FI 390 for a small amount on a test loop. First of all, generally speaking the Betas straight up turn/handle better than any of the competition. Secondly, I can tell you that other than needing a strong skid plate to prevent frame squash, the Beta 4 strokes are completely bullet proof. You can't hurt the motor on these things. Very overbuilt. Huge radiators, dual oil chambers, thick engine cases etc. Nicely made.
As far the 390 goes, my impression from my brief ride was very smooth and strong. Lots of power (more than my KTM 350 XCF) but also smoother. I have a 2017 390 race edition on the way (can't wait) so I will post up a better ride report once I get some saddle time on it.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like some great characteristics.
I'm not in fear of a poor quality product but as far as hop-up potential the Beta's seem limited compared to maybe other brands.
Can you get High compression pistons? Aftermarket ECU's like a Vortex etc...?
I really like to mod bikes to my tastes.

If the 2017 RR-S is anything like my 2016 390RR then it will be awesome.

I honestly feel the 390 is one of the best kept secrets in the dirt bike world. It's such a fun and easy bike to ride in just about any condition. I'm nothing but a helmet full of grins whenever I ride it. Great torque, handling and very light. Just twist the throttle and go. I ride the sandy pine barrens of New Jersey which have tight single track, fire roads and some more open stuff. I also ride the rocky, rooty trails of Pennsylvania. The 390 shines everywhere. I only ride slab when connecting between trails and it does fine there also. I would only have considered the 480/500 if I rode wide open desert terrain, which I don't.

Ghostrider, I typically don't modify my bikes as heavily as you do so I can't help you there, sorry.

The 350 and 430 are known to be revvier engines. Coming from a WR250R I didn't want a bike that I had to constantly rev to go fast, so I turned to the 390 and 480. After some extensive research and talking with a few owners, I concluded that the longer stroke of the 390 would be perfect for my type of riding and I was right. No regrets at all. Someone above mentioned it and is correct about the smoothness of the 390's engine. It's a real gem of a motor which just purrs. Really great bike.
