If the 2017 RR-S is anything like my 2016 390RR then it will be awesome.
I honestly feel the 390 is one of the best kept secrets in the dirt bike world. It's such a fun and easy bike to ride in just about any condition. I'm nothing but a helmet full of grins whenever I ride it. Great torque, handling and very light. Just twist the throttle and go. I ride the sandy pine barrens of New Jersey which have tight single track, fire roads and some more open stuff. I also ride the rocky, rooty trails of Pennsylvania. The 390 shines everywhere. I only ride slab when connecting between trails and it does fine there also. I would only have considered the 480/500 if I rode wide open desert terrain, which I don't.
Ghostrider, I typically don't modify my bikes as heavily as you do so I can't help you there, sorry.
The 350 and 430 are known to be revvier engines. Coming from a WR250R I didn't want a bike that I had to constantly rev to go fast, so I turned to the 390 and 480. After some extensive research and talking with a few owners, I concluded that the longer stroke of the 390 would be perfect for my type of riding and I was right. No regrets at all. Someone above mentioned it and is correct about the smoothness of the 390's engine. It's a real gem of a motor which just purrs. Really great bike.
