Makes me want to ride a 390 all these reviews. I have a 350 which once un corked is amazing would love to ride a 390 with a map and a muffler. I rode a 430 race and loved it even the forks :)

I'm not in fear of a poor quality product but as far as hop-up potential the Beta's seem limited compared to maybe other brands.
Can you get High compression pistons? Aftermarket ECU's like a Vortex etc...?
I really like to mod bikes to my tastes.

Ghost

I fully understand liking to mod bikes, done so many myself. But when it comes to performance on these bikes, if you want more you're better off to buy a 430 instead of the 390 etc.

You can get the map for the aftermarket pipes and I recently found out you can swap 430 cams into the other engines if you like that racier type of power better. I don't know if you can swap maps also, or need to.

But really, it makes better sense to buy the engine performance you want out of the box and focus your mods on other aspects of the bike. I bought my 500 because it had all the power I wanted with the type of delivery I wanted, and I'm super pleased with it box stock. I have been focusing my mods on the rest of the bike to shape it to my needs/tastes.

Not knocking, just offering up an opinion.

For others with 390s - what's the realistic range with the stock 2 gallon tank? I've have ISDE race coming up, that's two laps. It's usually 100 miles. is the stock tank gonna get me one lap?? I HATE big tanks that add girth to the bikes. My 300RR did the race last year without hitting reserve. So, i'm hopefully this 4T 390 will get the job done with the 2 gallon stock tank... Thoughts???

I'm really drawn to the 390 for dual sporting (moto-camping), but the lack of a big tank is a problem for me. I have to go with KTM (and went with the 350XCF) just for the 5.3 gallon tank, yeah it's big, but that's the point...to get away... My previous bike was the KTM 525 with the 6.6 gallon tank, the efi 350 gets about the same range though, but the 350 is so racey...that's when I found the 390 when I was searching for a torquier bike. I'm in the processes of doing the valves on my 350 and put in XCW cams...we'll see how that changes things...

There are two accessory tanks available for the efi bikes. Offered in black or natural, you get your choice of 3.0 or 4.0 gallon tanks. Should take you just about anywhere you want to go.

As a related aside, you should be able to get 50 miles from the stock 2.0 gallon tank, but I'd check it before race day

I happened to check cams between models. 390 has unique EXH cam from 430/500. And 390/430 share INT cam and the 500 INT is unique. Did you hear that a race team was putting 430 intake cams in the 480cc engine for quicker revving, more hit? It would be interesting to try. I installed a throttle tamer, no map change from stock. It made light throttle applications easier to modulate. And then the power comes on quicker after that. It is not a huge difference, and not really necessary most of the time, but I do like how it feels with the tamer. If I was racing, I would probably prefer stock throttle and would consider the hotter cam

so, you are saying that if you wanted a 390 to be racer, you just add the Exh came from the 430? Sounds like intake is the same.

Honestly, I wouldn't count on it at race speeds. It'll be very close.

There probably more to it than just the cams, as in fuel maps that work best for each cc range. Also, you have to make sure piston doesn't touch valve. But, YES, the 390/430 cam is the same part number. Take a peak in the parts list for 2016 RS and page 27 is where the part numbers are listed. I'm sure the info will be available at some point. Of course, in California, we would probably be breaking the law.
