Most braces are OK for average conditions, but if you want the rad to survive a hit on a rock, you have to beef things up. Ideally, you want the cross brace posts to go directly to the frame mounts. Most braces don't, so add two that do, top and bottom. This way the force of a hit goes directly to to the frame, instead of bending the rad and brace around the frame mount. A thicker side plate and added grills to braces without them help lateral support as well. Might seem excessive, but there is no good place to fall here and I have not had to straighten a rad in years.
