I ride trials bikes primarily now, although rarely do a competition (too far away).
I started with little bikes as a kid (Benelli 50) then MX raced (OSSA), got away from it for awhile and got back in to modern enduro type bikes.
But I had several good riding friends get pretty hurt and decided I needed to slow down, so changed my style.. I got a trials bike and it was great. But I still wanted to ride trails.
So I bought an OSSA Exporer (still have it). Wonderful bike- full trials but has a second, larger fuel tank and a very good seat. Plus full road lighting so I could plate it.
They don’t make them anymore, so I bought a Beta 300 4T factory (used) so I wouldn’t put so many hours on the OSSAs. I quite like it, has the long range tank/seat (I rarely use the seat- but nice for gravel road connectors, when I goof up and places where really no trail so I have to paddle, since there is so much brush I can’t see what I’m hitting.
The Beta has worked really well for me- the power is very similar to the Explorer- it does weigh a little more but still pretty light. I do like the engine braking effect for those long steep descents. Plus fuel mileage is even better than the OSSA (which was quite good, perhaps the fuel injection helping a lot?)
So now I ride as accurate and under control as I can. A completely different focus than just going fast. Certainly a workout - but of course riding an enduro bike quickly or over gnarly stuff is a workout also. The legs especially get loads of exercise- since there is a LOT of preloading and using the legs for suspension etc.
