So my riding buddies son crashed today and his fingers went into the spinning rear sprocket. It couldn't be reattached and they are hoping the other one survives. Just one of those freaky things.

Some prayers for a fast recovery... variations of this have happened to a couple of people that I've heard of locally. I try to be conscious of keeping my hands free from the back wheel in a crash and just when helping push guys etc....but sometimes bad things happen.. That's a terrible injury.

Ouch!

My instinct when I was really young was young was to have hands out trying to slow myself down on impact with the ground - lots of sprained wrists...

I always pull my arms/hands into my body when I crash and "make a ball" - clinch my hands into a fist too. I have done this since I was mx racing in the early 1970s; I heard this was what Roger Decoster did in a bad crash to avoid injury.

That being said - sometimes, velocity and momentum are not your friends and you have little control over your "destiny'.

Did this young man have insurance?

That's too bad. A real unfortunate accident. I hope he can heal up and get back to a normal life.
I did a little road racing in the eighties and crashed once. I pulled myself into a ball and just rolled. I remember waiting to stop for what seemed to be an eternity. I as thought I stopped and right then a wheel sped past my face shield. I got up and found I hadn't really stopped yet but managed to stumble-run over the tire wall and off the racing surface. I was pretty bruised up and sore the next day but no broken or damaged extremities.

Funny thing I found out was although I was going way faster the entire crash sequence took a long time in my mind. Usually crashing on a dirt bike while traveling much slower, a crash only lasts the blink of an eye. Rarely do you have a chance to prepare for impact
